The purpose of this program is to provide students from Latin America with the opportunity to take courses on Korea in areas, primarily humanities, where coverage is not available in Latin America.
The Center for Korean Studies at UCLA is pleased to announce the 2010 Winter Quarter program of fellowships in Korean Studies for graduate and advanced undergraduate students from colleges and universities in Latin America. The purpose of this program is to provide students from Latin America with the opportunity to take courses on Korea in areas, primarily humanities, where coverage is not available in Latin America. This program is open to students at all universities in Latin America and is supported by a grant from the Academy of Korean Studies in Seongnam, Korea.
The number of students selected to come to UCLA will depend on the availability of funds. The fellowship will provide up to $1,500 in round trip airfare, up to $2,000 in registration and student service fees, $1,500 for housing expenses, and $1,200 in stipends for students chosen to participate in the program.
Knowledge of the Korean language is not required, but students will be required to have English language skills sufficient to understand lectures and write research papers. Students will be expected to enroll in at least two Korea-related courses during their stay at UCLA.
The tentative schedule of Korea-related courses at UCLA for Winter Quarter 2010 include both graduate and upper division undergraduate courses in pre-modern and modern Korean history, folklore, art history, literature, thought, geography and music. There is also a wide range of courses in the Korean language; students must take a placement examination before they can enroll in language courses.
Winter quarter 2010 instruction begins on January 3, and the quarter ends on March 18. Selected participants should purchase their own round trip ticket and plan to arrive at UCLA no later than January 2. The airfare will be reimbursed after the end of the program. For housing, the Center for Korean Studies will make necessary arrangements to provide suitable housing off campus to selected participants prior to their arrival.
Students who are interested in the program must apply online providing the following documentation:
- a one-page statement of purpose;
- curriculum vitae;
- a current transcript from the applicant's university;
(The transcript does not have to be official or translated into English.)
- Two letters of recommendation from professors familiar with the applicant's work, to include one from the student's faculty advisor and one attesting to the applicant's ability to do coursework in the English language;
(For undergraduates, the faculty advisor should address the following: the proposed academic exercise that is required to complete the degree program, the length of time expected to spend at UCLA, whether academic credits will be awarded following the completion of the program, the manner in which the proposed work at UCLA will be transferred towards the student's diploma, and the students satisfactory academic credentials to participate in this program.)
