Master in International Strategy and Trade Policy
Program with the collaboration of the World Trade Organization and the World Trade Institute of the University of Bern.
The program aims at strengthening the professional skills of students, delivering conceptual and practical tools, so they have the knowledge and background necessary in their different areas and a greater understanding and a better capacity for analysis regarding the complexities of international economic negotiation processes.
The MEIPC prepares the professionals so that they can contribute to the decision-making processes in international strategy and trade policy, in a conception that facilitates dialogue, understanding and joint analytical work of the public-private sectors.
Specific objectives
Specifically, this program will train specialist who:
- Have knowledge regarding the principles of the Political Economy, the norms and institutions, and the integration processes.
- Understand and apply quantitative methodologies to the commercial reality of the countries.
- Understand, through practical tools, the problems faced by agents in the decision making regarding international strategy and trade policy.
- Know, from different disciplines, the complexities of the public sector and the private sector in their relationship with the issues of international trade insertion
- Topics covered by the program include, among others, political economy, international economics, multilateral trade systems, preferential trade systems, regimes for solving trade and investment disputes, economic relations legal instruments, regionalism, management of international business, and statistics.
Schedule
Classes will take place from Monday to Thursday at the Institute between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., and Saturdays depending on the calendar.

Graduation Profile
The program will allow its students to acquire a series of specific theoretical-practical skills and knowledge in the area. At the end of the program, students will have a curricular profile based on the following competencies:

Specific Competences
Graduate students:
- Anticipate scenarios in different contexts of internationalization and interdependence of the Economy, and handle principles and rules of International Law applicable to international economic relations.
- Handle knowledge of the public and private sector considering the process and internationalization, and evaluates different scenarios in the world order for decision making.
- Detect business opportunities according to trends in competitiveness, creating instruments and strategies in the area of trade policy.
- Have theoretical management in measures of trade insertion in international contexts of high complexity, including its scope and challenges.
- Understand the origins, development and contemporary problems of international economic policy.
Employment Fields
Graduate students will be able to work in the following areas:
- In the public sector, particularly in those institutions that develop activities in the field of trade, finance, cooperation, the environment, and diplomacy.
- In the private sector, especially in those organizations that carry out international activities regarding trade, investment and services, or that are interested in the process of international insertion.
- Organizations of the third sector (non-governmental organizations, political parties, unions) whose scope of action has international components.
- In international organizations, particularly those related to trade, investment, services, intellectual property, the environment, and others.
- The media
- In professional activities that are related to the challenges of labor insertion.
Requirements and Application
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should be in possession of a bachelor's degree or a professional degree, granted by national or foreign universities, or by higher education institutes, whose level, content and duration of studies are equivalent to that of a bachelor's degree at the University of Chile, determined by the Academic Committee of the Program.
Applicants should fill out the application form provided by the Institute of International Studies and send the following documents:
- Official certificate, issued by competent authority, of the university professional degree or Bachelor's degree. For the purposes of the application, a legalized copy can be presented. In the case of foreign students, the certificate must be legalized with the apostille or visa in the Consulate of Chile of the corresponding country. The original certificate will be required to obtain the degree.
- Grade transcripts of the studies carried out, including the corresponding scale and graduation ranking.
- Recommendation letters.
- Letter explaining the applicant's interest in participating in this Program (maximum length, 500 words).
- Medical insurance for foreign students.
- Demonstrate competence in reading texts and understanding classes in English, through a language certificate authorized by the Committee.
- Interview with professors of the Program. If you are not in Chile, a Skye meeting is permitted.
For applicant’s selection, the Academic Committee may, in addition to the study of the background, request a knowledge exam in the discipline on which the Program is concerned, which allows to appreciate objectively their level of preparation.
Applications must be submitted electronically or by presenting the background at the Institute of International Studies.
Admission request
The application form must be completed by all candidates (national or foreign) who request admission to the Postgraduate and Postgraduate courses offered by the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.
The clarity and precision of the answers will allow to correctly evaluate the background and experience of the candidate.

Application Process
- Applications are open and will be received until December 2021. Use the application form provided by the Institute.
- The interviews are made once the Graduate School has all the background of the applicants.
- Applicants living abroad:
- The interview will be conducted on Skype and a certificate of proficiency in Spanish will be required, where appropriate.
- It is recommended that students coming from abroad arrive at least 10 days before classes start.
