PhD Program in International Studies

In line with the mission of the University of Chile, the PhD Program in International Studies encourages the generation, integration and communication concerning the scientific knowledge of global reality, with an interdisciplinary approach that combines concepts, methodologies and fieldwork – basically - of International Relations, Political Science, History of International Relations, International Economics and International Law.
Program Description
The overall goal of the PhD in International Studies is to train highly qualified researchers in the field of International Studies, with an interdisciplinary profile to address the study of international affairs, thereby contributing to the scientific development with original, autonomous and rigorous research.
The specific objectives are the following:
- Strengthen students’ research on international affairs through readings, discussions and debates in the field of International Studies.
- Understand, analyze and problematize on the theoretical and methodological basis involved in the teaching of International Studies from an interdisciplinary perspective.
- Teach students research methodologies in Social Sciences in general and International Studies in particular, through courses that delve into quantitative and qualitative methods.
- Provide students with the necessary tools to generate pertinent, rigorous and innovative research proposals related to the program’s different lines of research, ensuring ethical standards of research and respecting human rights.
Lines of Research
- International Relations. This line of research addresses topics such as foreign policy analysis, comparative foreign policy, history of international relations, international security and conflict, international cooperation for development, global public policies, comparative politics, area studies and integrative studies, and other related matters.
- International Legal Relations. This line of research addresses topics such as legal relationships with foreign states, international organizations and/or other relevant stakeholders from the broad point of view of Public International Law; Law of Treaties; International Economic Law and Comparative Public Law, with special emphasis on regulating trade and investments, and settlement of controversies and disputes; international justice; climate change; human rights, international systems; and other related fields.
- International Economic Relations. This line of research addresses topics such as international economic phenomena from the perspective of political economy; development studies; international trade; trade policy; investments; development policies; and other related subject matters.

Graduation Profile
Students who complete the PhD Program in International Studies in the University of Chile have an analytical attitude towards global reality and an interdisciplinary approach that allows them to contribute to the scientific development at the national and international level. Accordingly, a Doctor in International Studies of the University of Chile:
- Demonstrates relevant knowledge of the field of international studies, addressing global phenomena from an interdisciplinary approach and with research independence.
- Identifies the main debates and problems related to international studies as an interdisciplinary field of knowledge in theory and practice, thus generating research that cross the borders.
- Develops new methodological strategies to face the challenges and needs associated to the international system in the specific context of globalization, with research independence.
- Encourages research work that is guided by principles of research ethics and respect for human and social rights, and considers the dissemination of new knowledge as well.
Application Process
Applicants to the PhD Program in International Studies should be in possession of a Bachelor's, Master’s or PhD degree in any of the areas of Social Sciences or, exceptionally, in related professional or disciplinary fields. In case the academic degree has been granted by a foreign university, it should be duly authenticated.
Applicants should provide proof of a previous education complying with the program’s objectives and requirements. In addition to the background check, the Academic Committee may decide to further evaluate the knowledge and competencies of the applicants regarding the disciplines addressed by the program. This evaluation may be in the form of an interview, examination or other mechanisms that allow to objectively demonstrate their level of preparation.
The Academic Committee will select the applicants based on their academic and professional background and the interviews, according to the following application requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree Certificate.
- Master’s and/or PhD Degree, if applicable.
- Transcript of previously obtained degrees.
- Photocopy of the identity card or passport.
- Curriculum Vitae.
- Motivation letter.
- Research project proposal, according to any of the lines of research of the PhD in International Studies.
- Certificate providing evidence of a satisfactory English language proficiency. The fulfilment of this requirement can be attested through a certificate from IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent tests.
Background Submission
The application form must be completed online by all candidates (national or international) who request admission to the PhD Program of International Studies in the University of Chile. The clarity and precision of the answers will allow to correctly evaluate the background and experience of the candidates.

- Notification of admission results: November 8th, 2024
